Ystad sits on the south coast of Skåne, facing the open Baltic rather than the sheltered sound that Malmö and Helsingborg look out on. That makes it more exposed to wind straight off the sea, with fewer landmasses nearby to take the edge off a blow from the south or south east.
The coastal position still moderates temperature the way it does elsewhere along the Skåne coast, milder winters and cooler summers than well inland, but the open exposure means wind and sea state are often the bigger factor here than in the more sheltered coastal towns.
